St. Mary’s Church, an outstanding example of High Victorian Gothic architecture by one of its leading exponents, William Burges. It is considered to be one of his finest works, his 'ecclesiastical masterpiece'. Begun in 1871 and consecrated in 1878. The interior is extravagantly decorated with coloured marble, stained glass, a splendid organ. Painted and gilded figures retain their original glory. |
