Kirkstall Abbey is the finest early monastic site in Britain. Founded
in 1152 by Henry de Lacy, Baron of Pontefract and was mainly completed
by 1182. After 400 years the Monastic life ended in 1539 when the
abbey was surrendered to Henry VIII's commissioners. It was, after
many years of ownership by the Saville and Brudenell families,
presented by Col. John North to the City of Leeds in 1889.
